Attend an Adlib Performance
You may have heard a pan player in the subway or on a cruise ship, but have you ever heard a steel orchestra composed entirely of steel pans playing all genres of music: Pop, Latin, Classical, Calypso, Jazz, Reggae? A steel orchestra consists of steel pans that play the entire musical range, from soprano melody to bass rhythm.
Perhaps you have heard a steel orchestra (maybe even Adlib) at a wedding reception, cocktail hour or some similar function. You enjoyed the music, but that is not why you were there, and you would like the opportunity to be able to concentrate on pan music without the distraction of other activities.
The Adlib Steel Orchestra regularly appears publicly, including free concerts at public libraries, where you can experience the beautiful sound of a steel orchestra firsthand. During the summer, Adlib also performs at events in public parks. They have performed at the Caribbean Day festivities at Eisenhower Park in Nassau County for many years and as a part of the annual summer concert series at Agawam Park in Southampton since 2011.
Adlib has also performed at other public venues in the tri state area, including Lincoln Center, various Caribbean Carnivals and festivals, and numerous street fairs and block parties.
If you want to hear the ultimate in New York steelband, attend the events that Adlib participates in as a part of the Labor Day West Indian festivities in Brooklyn. The orchestra competes in the annual WIADCA Panorama held the Saturday evening of Labor Day weekend in the parking lot behind the Brooklyn Museum. If you can, listen to and watch Adlib “warm up” on the street outside the museum grounds before you enter. For information and tickets, call Adlib.
The band typically also participates in the J’ouvert parade which begins in the early hours of Labor Day on Flatbush Avenue near Grand Army Plaza and continues on Empire Boulevard in Brooklyn. Again, call Adlib for details.
